Southampton Damned if They Do, More Damned If They Don’t - Southampton Relegated After Championship Points Deduction
Southampton has officially been relegated from the Championship, but things could yet be even worse for the club if it doesn’t win 4 points or more in the remaining two games of the Championship season.
If Southampton gains 4 points or more in the last two Championship season then the club could yet finish the season outside of the relegation zone. If this is indeed the case, then the club will be deducted 10 Championship points, and will lose its place in the Championship nonetheless. If however the club is unable to come up with the points to secure safety, then the points will be deducted next season, and Southampton will therefore start off its League One campaign on -10 points.
The way that Southampton is being treated is rather odd to say the least, and surely a better policy here would be to deduct 10 points from Southampton next season regardless of what league the club happens to be in? If the Football League feels that 10 points ought to be deducted from Southampton next season then that’s perfectly fine, using the points deduction to make sure that the club will be in the league below next season though; that just doesn’t really seem right.
The club is to launch an appeal, as it does not believe that it’s deserving of a 10 point deduction given that the football club itself has not entered administration.
