Liverpool Comfortably See off Real Madrid to Reach the Champions League Quarter Finals

Published by richleigh at 9:31 pm under Champions League, Soccer News Edit This

UEFA Champions League LogoWith a 4-0 victory over Real Madrid this evening, Liverpool progressed into the Champions League quarter-finals, achieving a 5-0 aggregate win over the side from Spain.

Torres opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 16th minute of the match, with Steven Gerrard adding another from the penalty spot just before the interval. Straight after half-time Steven Gerrard scored again, slotting home in fantastic style in the 47th minute of the match to make it three.

With the game having been effectively ended as a contest with little over 45 minutes played; Dossena struck late to further compound Real Madrid’s misery when he scored the fourth in the 88th minute. Soaking up a lot of Real Madrid pressure, Liverpool sprung several counter attacks, and ultimately it was substitute Andrea Dossena that profited.

Chelsea also qualified this evening, and with Arsenal and Manchester United still to play tomorrow; there’s a chance that all four teams from the Premier League could once more reach the Champions League quarter-finals. Liverpool and Chelsea are the first two English teams in the hat, but with Arsenal taking a 1-0 lead to Roma and Manchester United arriving goalless with Inter Milan at Old Trafford; there’s a good chance that another two English teams will be going through tomorrow, and we could yet have another all English Champions League final.

The final is to be held at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome this year, so roll on May 27th when we’ll spend an evening in Italy to take in the fine annual event that is the UEFA Champions League Final.
