Queen of the South LogoMartyn Lancaster, an English footballer born in Wigan, has earned a contract with Queen of the South thanks to a highlights video uploaded to YouTube by his wife Mysti. The video is ten minutes long, and was spotted on the web by Scottish agent Jake Duncan. Duncan showed the video to a number of different clubs, and after Queen of the South showed an interest; Martyn Lancaster was flown to Scotland for a trial with the club.

Having impressed in his trial, Lancaster was snapped up by Queen of the South on a six month contract on January 9th, and made his debut the following day against Falkirk in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup. The central defender had been without a club since a decision was made in November 2008 that the Atlanta Silverbacks men’s team would sit out the 2009 season.

Lancaster actually began his professional career with Chester City in 1998, and went on to play for Leigh RMI and Northwich Victoria before moving out to America in 2006. Wilmington Hammerheads was Lancaster’s first club in America; he then went on to sign for Atlanta Silverbacks in 2007. Lancaster’s first game for Atlanta Silverbacks came in June 2007, and his last against Miami FC on September 21st 2008. Interest was shown in Martyn Lancaster by other American soccer teams, what he really wanted for was a move back to Britain however as he missed the great British game.

Speaking with the Daily Record, Lancaster reveals that before joining he “didn’t know anything about Queen of the South or where they came from”. He also speaks of how he can’t even personally use a computer, the video was all his wife Mysti’s doing, and she’s therefore the one to thank for his move back into British football.

Lancaster’s story is certainly a very interesting one, and everything the player said to the Daily Record can be read here.

Queen of the South currently sits eighth in the Irn-Bru sponsored Scottish First Division. Level on points with ninth place Clyde; the club therefore risks relegation to the Scottish Second Division, and Martyn Lancaster will be hoping to do enough at the back over the course of the next couple of months to help the club stay up, and secure a contract with Queen of the South for next season.

Martyn Lancaster is back in British football, he’s already made his debut, and although the game ended with a 4-2 defeat for Queen of the South; Lancaster will be pleased to have played the full 90 minutes, and will now be looking to really establish himself at Palmerston Park.

The following is the Martyn Lancaster highlights video which was put together by Martyn’s wife Mysti.
