Dean Windass Joins Oldham Athletic on Loan

Published by richleigh at 11:30 pm under English League One, Transfer News Edit This

Dean WindassVeteran striker Dean Windass has agreed a deal to join Oldham Athletic on loan until the end of the season. The 39 year old has found his first team appearances limited this season at Hull, and is off to Oldham in hope of finding the two goals required to take him up to the huge milestone of 200 for league goals scored.

Oldham is his ninth professional club in a career which has seen him play for such teams as Oxford United, Middlesbrough, and Bradford City amongst others. Windass has also played for both Sheffield sides of Wednesday and United in the past, and having now come so close to scoring 200 league goals; his supreme scoring record is certainly there for all to see.

Windass is no spring chicken, he’s a proven goalscorer however, and is just what Oldham Athletic is after at present. The team is currently 5th in League One, and a good goalscorer like Dean Windass could be a huge help in Oldham’s bid to secure promotion to the Championship this season.

Dean Windass will be available for selection when Oldham take on Hartlepool tomorrow, and if he can net a lot of goals over the course of the next few months then he may well become an Oldham player on a permanent basis next season.

Windass may not have a future at Hull if the club remains in the Premier League; a player of his ability could certainly do a brilliant job for a team like Oldham though, and if he does impress and ultimately join the club on a permanent basis in the summer then I feel he can play a key role at the club next season.

Windass turns 40 on April 1st, he has no plans to retire from football just yet though, and when he does decide to do so then he wishes to enter the world of football management. Hull City is the team at which Dean Windass’ career began and he obviously has a lot of love for his hometown club; he’ll no doubt put in just as much effort at Oldham however, and is likely to go down well with fans this season, especially if he can score a lot of goals before the seasons out.

Oldham Athletic has made a smart move in acquiring the signature of Dean Windass; it may only be a loan signing, but it’s certainly a good bit of business, and Windass will surely score a lot of goals during his time with The Latics.
