Nigel CloughHaving spent ten years with Blue Square Premier side Burton Albion; Nigel Clough has moved on and has now been named the new manager of Derby County. Nigel’s father Brian Clough famously managed Derby County between 1967 and 1973, doing a brilliant job whilst there in getting the team promoted to the top flight of English football in 1969, and then winning the top level league in 1972 for the first time in Derby County’s history. The club will now be hoping that Nigel can follow in his father’s footsteps in once more taking the team to the top flight.

Derby County is a team currently 18th in the Championship, and as we approach the final third of the season there’s a real risk of relegation for the club. After a 1-0 win over Manchester United this evening things are looking up for Derby right now though, and as Clough officially takes charge of the team tomorrow; fans will be hoping that Derby County can take momentum from this huge win and really start performing in the league.

Nigel Clough will probably not be as successful at Derby County as his father was 32 years ago; it would take a lot for him to achieve as much at the club as his father did, and despite his strong history at Burton; it’s a huge jump from the Blue Square Premier to the Championship, and there’s no telling yet as to whether or not Brian Clough will be able to replicate his non-league success in the football league. It’s a big jump for Nigel, he’ll surely be up for the challenge though, and although it will have hurt him to have left the club he’s spent the last decade managing; he’ll definitely be looking to impress the Pride Park faithful.

So Nigel Clough is the new manager of Derby County, he officially takes charge from tomorrow, and Derby County will once more be a football club under Clough management. Burton’s loss is Derby’s gain, and the team will now be looking to climb the table in a battling quest to try and achieve promotion. The play-offs are not out of reach yet, there’s still a long way to go in the season, and come May the club may perhaps be in the top six.

Derby County is a football club looking to move forward, Nigel Clough has taken a huge leap forward in his managerial career, and all being well and good; Clough can thrive with Derby, achieve greatness, and return the team to the top. Repeating what his father accomplished in winning the Premier League may be a bit of an unrealistic ambition; Nigel Clough will be looking to do the best job possible at Derby however, and his passion and drive will surely go down well in the East Midlands.
