Late Villa Goal Breaks Evertonian Hearts
Everton thought they’d done enough to secure a draw when Joleon Lescott acrobatically slammed home an injury time equaliser, seconds later however and Ashley Young was winning the game at the other end of the field.
Villa took the lead courtesy of a spectacular Steve Sidwell goal after 30 seconds, Lescott equalised 30 minutes later though and the two teams therefore went in at half-time with the score level at 1-1. Nine minutes into the second half though and Ashley Young found the goal to once more give Aston Villa the edge, and that’s the way it remained until late into injury time.
When Everton levelled the game at 2-2 the match felt as though it was already over; it was late into injury time and many were expecting the referee to blow his whistle for full-time. It didn’t quite happen like that though, the referee let the game run on a little longer, and that provided Villa just enough time to score the winner with Ashley Young.
This was a big win for Aston Villa, a victory for Everton and they would have levelled Villa on 25 points; it wasn’t to be for The Toffees though, and they now slip to 8th as Portsmouth earned a point at West Brom.
Villa have the potential to crack the top four this season; this victory leaves the side just one point behind Arsenal, and Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill will surely be battling right until the very end of the season to win his side a place in the Champions League next year.
