First Chelsea, Now Arsenal: Burnley Through to the Carling Cup Semi-Finals

Published by richleigh at 11:52 pm under Carling Cup, Soccer News Edit This

Burnley beat Arsenal 2-0 this evening and are now heading through to the Carling Cup Semi-Finals. Two goals from Kevin McDonald sent the team flying through, and Burnley will now be joining Derby and two others in the semis.

Manchester United host Blackburn tomorrow, Tottenham meanwhile make the trip to Watford. There could potentially be three Championship teams in the Carling Cup Semi-Finals this season, guaranteeing that at least one Championship side will make it to the finals. Watford will have to beat Tottenham tomorrow if that’s to be the case though, and if Gomes plays as he has done so many times this season then he could well make the mistake that’ll gift Watford the victory.

This was a huge win for Burnley, and having beaten Chelsea in the last round and Arsenal this time; Burnley have now beaten two of the best teams in England in the space of a month. Admittedly it was a very young Arsenal side that lost this evening, a young Arsenal team that defeated Wigan 3-0, and Sheffield United 6-0 nonetheless though, so the fact that Burnley have managed such a comfortable 2-0 victory against them really is excellent.

Burnley have been the giant killers two times running now in the Carling Cup, they could potentially face Manchester United in the semis now though, and if they do play United in a semi-final situation then they’re likely to put out a full strength side.

Burnley have done an absolutely excellent job in reaching the Carling Cup semi-finals, whether or not they’ll get any further still remains to be seen; they’ve been very good in battle so far though and fans will now be dreaming of the team lifting the Carling Cup in February, and playing in the Europa League next season. An aggregate win over the course of the two legs of the semi-finals and Burnley will be heading for Wembley.
