Burnley Shock Chelsea, Tottenham Slam Liverpool

Published by richleigh at 9:18 pm under Soccer News Edit This

In an interesting night in the Carling Cup; two shock results occurred, with Tottenham overcoming Liverpool with a thumping 4-2 win, and Burnley beating big guns Chelsea 5-4 on penalties. The win for Tottenham was not that big a deal truth be told, it’s actually the second time they’ve beaten Liverpool this month; Burnley’s beating of Chelsea however? Now that’s what I call a huge cup upset.

1-1 was the score in the Chelsea game after extra time, when Burnley keeper Brian Jensen kept out Jon Mikel Obi’s penalty though; he became a Burnley legend as Burnley knocked out one of the best teams in the world. Chelsea have now lost the last five penalty shoot-outs they’ve taken part in, the biggest of which of course having come in last year’s Champions League final in which Chelsea lost out to Manchester United.

In the third of tonight’s fixtures Blackburn edged past Sunderland with a 2-1 victory. Three Championship teams will now be represented in the Carling Cup quarter finals, those of Derby County, Watford, and Burnley. It’ll be an interesting draw, and one which will now lack both Chelsea and Liverpool. Arsenal and Man United will be present in the draw, half of the big four have now been dumped out of the tournament however and it’ll be left to these two teams to shine. Arsenal seem to be in explosive form at current, and if they can win with their young guns then they’ll be able to add some more silverware to the trophy cabinet which for the last few seasons has remained quite empty.

Burnley fans will be in joyous spirit this evening, it’s not every night you get to beat Chelsea, and the fact that Burnley are a league below them will surely serve to make it all the more exciting for them. Burnley will now be eying up the Carling Cup and thinking to themselves ‘If we can beat Chelsea, we can therefore beat anyone’, and in thinking that they’d probably be 100% right.

Burnley is a team with as good a chance as any of lifting the Carling Cup this season. Good luck to them; let’s just hope they don’t get drawn away at Old Trafford in the next round, a home game against Derby or Watford would give them a far greater opportunity for progression, and now that they’ve come this far they’ll be wanting to go all the way.
