Wycombe Win Against The Wombles
In a game that finished 4-1 to Wycombe, superior finishing was ultimately the difference between these two teams at Kingsmeadow this evening. Both teams played well, whilst Wycombe Wanderers successfully converted their chances into goals however; AFC Wimbledon were left to regret their many wasted corners, and the Wycombe defence held fairly firm in only conceding one goal throughout the game.
Wycombe’s Matt Harold grabbed himself a hat-trick in this game, Matt Phillips also scoring a goal for Wycombe, with high scoring Sam Hatton securing AFC Wimbledon’s only goal of the game. Wimbledon’s goal actually brought the game back to 2-1, and for the 6 minutes that followed AFC Wimbledon looked confident moving forward and looked menacingly for an equaliser. It didn’t happen for them though, Wycombe scored a third and with a 3-1 lead; never did Wycombe look like letting that advantage slip.
It’s quite hard on The Dons that the game finished 4-1, it belies the fact of just how even this game was at times, and although there wasn’t too much to separate these two teams; a three goal win was achieved by League Two team Wycombe, and they’ll definitely be quite pleased with that. In truth though Wycombe could have scored more, Matt Harold could have sealed his hat-trick in the first half were he not foiled by the inside of the post, and every time Wycombe attacked there was a definite feeling that a goal could be scored. When Wimbledon attacked meanwhile the threat was always far smaller, The Dons were not so confident in front of goal, and whilst Wycombe smoothly slotted home four; all Wimbledon could manage was one.
AFC Wimbledon will be pleased with the way they played in this game, they may now be out of the FA Cup but they didn’t play badly, and can now go back to concentrating fully on the Blue Square South. Wimbledon are currently 8 points behind league leaders Chelmsford, they have three games in hand however and should they win them all then that’ll take them to the very top of the league.
Wycombe will now travel away to face Eastwood Town and it’ll be an interesting tie for them; Eastwood are in the Northern Premier League, three leagues below Wycombe, so in theory it should be quite an easy game. With the FA Cup there are no easy games though, Eastwood will be out to cause an upset and Wycombe will just have to play with confidence and great precision just as they did in this fine game against AFC Wimbledon.
