Materazzi Wins Daily Mail Damages
Marco Materazzi, an Italian footballer who currently plays for Inter Milan, has won damages from the Daily Mail over claims made by the paper after the 2006 World Cup final.
After the 2006 final in Germany, the Daily Mail reported that the Italian international Materazzi had racially abused Zinedine Zidane and that it was this which led to Zidane head butting the player and being sent off for his actions. Reportedly it was actually Zinedine’s sister that Materazzi insulted, no racial slur was ever uttered and the Daily Mail have apologised for reporting that there ever was.
The actual amount won by Materazzi over this whole issue remains undisclosed, all that’s known is that the Daily Mail has now paid the price for wrongly accusing someone of racial abuse however and the paper has been made to look stupid for its flawed coverage of the issue. Whilst still wrong; insulting someone’s sister is very different to racially abusing them, and it’s good to see that after over two years Materazzi has now been compensated for wrongfully having had his name dragged through the dirt.

This is really bad! Fancy the Daily Mail getting it wring. I’ve always found them to be very accurate.
Good report on the matter. They will be more careful in the future one would have thought.
Bad reporting indeed!
