Tony Adams Named New Portsmouth Manager

Published by richleigh at 5:20 pm under English Premier League, Soccer News Edit This

On October 25th 2008 Tony Adams was named the new caretaker manager of Portsmouth alongside Joe Jordan. This came as the news that Harry Redknapp had moved to White Hart Lane to manage Tottenham hit. Portsmouth Football Club was paid £5 million for Tottenham’s poaching of Harry Redknapp, and straight away the Portsmouth caretaker managers were announced. Adams had been the assistant manager underneath Redknapp, and it seemed almost inevitable that sooner or later it would be announced that Tony Adams was officially the new manager of Portsmouth.

Yesterday (October 28th 2008) Tony Adams was indeed officially appointed the new full-time manager of Portsmouth Football Club. This will be Adams second job as a full-time football manager; his first chance to show his managerial credential came back in November 2003 when he was appointed the manager of at the time struggling League One side Wycombe Wanderers. Wycombe Wanderers was that season relegated, and although the team started the 2004/05 season well; Wycombe soon began to fall down the league leading to Tony Adams resignation in November 2004.

After the Wycombe job, Tony Adams was twice a football coach in the Netherlands before joining Portsmouth as assistant manager in June 2006. Having been at the club for over two years now assisting Harry Redknapp; he should find little difficulty in adjusting into his new role of full-time manager of the club. As a manager there’s a lot more responsibility than there is with being an assistant; the Portsmouth board obviously have full faith in the abilities of Tony Adams however and will be hoping for a long and successful future ahead with Tony Adams at the helm of the club.

With an away game at Liverpool, Tony Adams will face a tough first task in his first game as full-time Portsmouth manager; if he can get through this one though and move on positively from here, then this could be the start of something truly special for Tony Adams and his new Portsmouth team.
